Northeast Portland is a diverse area of the city that is well known for its historic architecture and its trendy arts and food scene. Neighborhoods like Irvington and Alameda Ridge feature some of the oldest and most expensive homes in Portland. These spacious homes sit on immaculately maintained lots with beautiful tree lined streets and two massive parks, complete with play structures, sports fields, a dog park, and picnic areas. Irvington is simply the epitome of “Old Portland.” And blocks away, another emblematic area of NE Portland is the Alberta Arts District. Centered around NE Alberta Street, this epicenter of youth and culture highlights art galleries, music, unique shops, and trendy cafes. Events are always happening here with the Alberta Rose Theater, Alberta Street Pub, and Last Thursday, the weekly offering in the summer months with street vendors and performers.
Northeast Portland has a variety of neighborhoods – Hollywood, Lloyd District, Grant Park, Sabin - to suit your needs for urban living. Unlike the west side suburbs, Northeast Portland has small enclaves of residential and commercial spaces with chic shops, cafes, food carts, restaurants, pubs, and endless entertainment where most are within walking distance. City parks, with picnic areas, play structures and biking/walking paths are also scattered throughout for outdoor activities. The city of Portland aims to make all areas of the city walkable and bikeable. It is the third best city in the US for biking so Northeast Portland has an excellent infrastructure for your biking needs.
While Northeast Portland has more expensive real estate because of the historic nature of Irvington or the lack of available housing in the Alberta Arts District, Southeast Portland tends to be more affordable with a broader range of housing options. There are established neighborhoods with classic Portland architecture like Eastmoreland and Laurelhurst, but also trendier, quirky neighborhoods like Woodstock and Belmont.
Southeast Portland prides itself on its unique culture and food, following Portland’s mantra of “Keep Portland Weird.” Hawthorne is one of the city’s liveliest neighborhoods and is popular for its craft cocktails, food carts and trendy cafes.
There is something for everyone in Southeast Portland. Hawthorne provides a quirky and trendy lifestyle, while Woodstock provides the more established and affordable housing, and Mt Tabor offers something in between. The Mt Tabor neighborhood is home to Mt Tabor Park which sits atop a 636-foot butte in the middle of Portland. The area is full of multiple home types like craftsman, ranches, and bungalows in all price ranges, all still within walking distance of everything you need. It’s a bit of a mix of trendy shops and established residences. The atmosphere in Southeast Portland with great food, entertainment, and endless activities is why so many residents call it home.
